AI Isn't Coming for Managers, it's Coming for Managerial Work

Every week, some manager asks me a version of the same question: "Is AI going to replace me?"

No. But it's about to wipe half your calendar.

We've spent years quietly confusing two different jobs - Management and administration. On a Tuesday, they feel identical. They are not.

The administration is the chasing. Collecting status updates. Turning ten threads into one summary. Booking the sync. Being the human router that carries information from one inbox to another. If you're honest about your week, that's a big slice of it.

That slice is exactly what AI is good at. So it's going to take it.

What it can't touch is the other half. Sitting with someone who's stuck and helping them get unstuck. Defusing a fight between two teams who both think they're right. Turning a vague executive goal into something your people can actually start on Monday. Making the hard call, and standing behind it when it goes wrong.

That was always the job. The admin just buried it.

So the manager who only moved information around is now exposed. The manager who actually led just got rescued. The busywork leaves; the real work stays.

Same role. Two very different outcomes, depending on what you were really doing all along.

So ask yourself plainly: if a tool did all your reporting and coordinating tomorrow, what would be left on your plate? Whatever that is, that's the part that was ever really your job.
